Identifying NICs on an ESXI Host

Hiya,

I'm going to be adding 3 PCI cards to an ESXI Host, each with 2 10gb NICs.

I am going to be placing different VLANs on each NIC for seporating the different types of traffic.

How do I know which physical NIC corresponds to the NICs in the console?

Is it just a case of plugging  the cables in one at a time and checking "red x" disappears against NIC in the console?

How would I know which one is for the management network when installing the software from the direct console, where you select the VLAN & NIC so I can connect up and later, to see the other NICs in the GUI?

Basically yes. From what understand, ESXi will enumerate the NICs in an ascending order based on the PCI slots they are plugged into. I usually use one cable, and check which vmnic shows up as "Connected" in the DCUI.

You can also compare the MAC address

see if the MAC address is visible on the PCI cards or maybe on the box and compare it against the MAC address listed on each vmnic in the DCUI.

If the PCI cards are from different vendor, you can also check from mac vendor lookup so at least you know which PCI is which vendor
