Distributed port group

Is there any reason/benefit to have a distributed port group without a vmkernel adapter?

I'm assuming you're referring to a vmnic, the physical network adapter? If so, the answer is "rarely." The VMs in this port group cannot talk to anything outside of the host that they reside upon.

If you are talking about a host's vmkernel interface, the reason you'd have a dvPortgroup without one would be to serve VM guest traffic.
