Difference Between Standard vSwitch on ESX3.5 and vSphere

Hello,

We've all heard about the dvSwitch functionality in vSphere but can somebody clarify to me the difference in functionality available from a standard vSwitch on ESX3.5 and vSphere? Looking at

http://www.vmware.com/products/vnetwork-distributed-switch/features.html

(and excluding the obvious difference in relation to VMsafe compatibility) the table in the above webpage states that the vsphere vswitch supports vlan segmentation whereas the esx3.5 vswitch doesn't. I would appreciate any thoughts / explanations in relation to this as, from what I can see, a standard vswitch in ESX3.5 and vSphere 4 both offer the same functionality in relation to VLANs i.e. (optionally) assigning a VLAN ID to port groups within vSwitches.

Thanks,

number1vspherefan.

Welcome to the forums!

A dvSwitch spans a vSwitch and thereby port groups over more than one ESX host. And it includes support for 3rd party virtual switches.

Also look at this short thread: http://communities.vmware.com/thread/222290;jsessionid=7DE21C6FE72DF6A5FB90179810F97939

Hi,

Thanks to AWo for the post. I don't think it deals with my question, my question is in relation to standard vSwitches in vSphere 4 and standard vSwitches in ESX3.5 and does not have any relevance to dvSwitches. Unless I'm missing something in your post?

Thanks,

number1vspherefan.

No problem. You missed nothing. I referred to your sentence:

>We've all heard about the dvSwitch functionality in vSphere but can somebody clarify to me the difference in functionality available from a standard vSwitch on ESX3.5 and vSphere?

Yes, no difference in standard vSwitches between 3.5 and 4.0
