Cat5 or cat6?

Hi everybody,

I need your help about network cabling in my little vsphere cluster.

This is my configuration:

N.1 Dell PowerEdge R710 - 8 Gb Ram - 3 Intel PRO 1000PT Dual Port Server Adapter Gigabit NIC (vcenter)

N.2 Dell PowerEdge 2950 - 32Gb Ram - 3 Intel PRO 1000PT Dual Port Server Adapter Gigabit NIC (vsphere host)

N.1 Dell MD3000i external iSCSI RAID array with 2 dual-port controllers

N.2 Dell PowerConnect 5424 Managed - 24 Port Gigabit 4 SFP slots

My question is: to connect the servers and storage on the gigabit switch, I need a cat5 or cat6 cable?

Thanks

cat5e is sufficient normally but if you do have the budget I would personally prefer cat6.

If your Cat5 can handle 1Gb then you can use it, but of course Cat6 is recommended.

Both are 4 Pair twisted cable the only difference is the number of

twists per foot. CAT has 5 twists per Foot and CAT 6 had 6 twists per

foot. I've used both and not seen any difference between the two and the only

thing that I've seen with the CAT6 patch cables that are made up is

that the Crossover and straight through are the same colour with a

piece of sticky paper on the Crossover.

either will work about the same with a Gigabite LAN
