vmtools licensing

Hi,

Can someone help me to understand if vmtools is free ? I didn't find anywhere saying people can download, use and distribute vm installed with vmtools with no charge.

https://www.vmware.com/support/packages

Thank you.

Yes. these are free from this location. you can find the latest vmtools from below location.

https://packages.vmware.com/tools/esx/latest/index.html

As vmtools is the package included with the virtual machine and without this Machine cant work. So by default its there, and you can use it. No link i got saying its free .This is just like asking in the Macdonald  if " Ham is free in HamBurger " or Is the "Sauce is Free with the Samosa"  :smileysilly:

All the best,

Hello Sunny,

Welcome to the community.

VMtools can be directly installed or upgrade from the vm itself. Just Select the vm> right click > Guest> install/upgrade vm tools installation and it will automatically install iin your vmtools.

And vmtools are absolutely free.

Hi Anjani,

Thank you for your reply. Is vmtools also free to download and use from http://packages.vmware.com/tools/esx/index.html ?

If possible, can you show me a page/link saying vmtools is free ?

Thanks,

-Liang

As Anjani said, you probably won't find any explicit mention that they are free anywhere, but that's because they are a key component in all vSphere editions and included by default in the hypervisor at no extra cost.

They are not even meant to be downloaded from the Internet; on this page it clearly states that downloading the tools from packages.vmware.com is merely an alternative to installing them from the vSphere client.
