virtual hardware 7, what's is it ?

Hi I'm running vmware on V3.5, sometimes, in the documentation, I see virtual hardware 7 ? Can you clarify for me what is it ?

Is it the configuration we have when we create a VM ?

Regards

You'll usually upgrade it when the VM is moved to a newer version of

the VMware host software (ESX, VMware Server, etc). The version

reflects the new capabilities in hardware that the VM will see and in

the VMX for the VM you'll see the parameters config.version and

virtualHW.version change when you do this.

Each version of ESX or VMware Server uses different virtual hardware to build your virtual machines. For example vmserver 1.0 would have used hardware version 4 while vmserver 2.0 would use hardware version 7. ESX does the same with version from 2.5 to 3.5. The hardware version tell us that new virtual devices are being used. When you import or migrate an older hardware version (like server 1.0 to server 2.0) you have to upgrade the virtual hardware version for the correct build. Your management console will always let you know if your vm will need it's virtual hardware upgraded.

That's means vm created with ESX 3.5 should to be updated and all new VM created with vshpere will be automaticly created in V7 ?

That's means vm created with ESX 3.5 should to be updated

It means they could be updated, if and when you are ready to update them from V4 to V7. Unless you need to make immediate use of one of the new features offered by V7 (SAS virtual device for Microsoft Cluster Service, IDE virtual devices, VMXNET3, Virtual Machine Hot Plug Support) then you can leave the existing V4 virtual machines alone. Its ultimately up to you to decide.

>and all new VM created with vshpere will be automaticly created in V7 ?

If you choose the "typical" option when creating a new virtual machine, it will be V7 hardware. If you choose the "custom" option when creating the new virtual machine, you can choose between V4 and V7 of the hardware.

Good Luck!

Hi All,

Is there any fast and easy way to upgrade the VM hardwareversion type from 4 into 7 ? eg. editing the .vmx file entry ? i tried to upgrade the VMWare tools but still the VM hardware shows v4.

The only way that i know and tested working was by using VCB v1.5 -fullvm backup and then restore it back using Converter Stand alone v4.0.1 and select hardware v7.

Kind Regards,

AWT

Yes, you can use Update Manager to upgrade the virtual hardware from 4 to 7. You can create a seperate baseline
