vSphere upgrade 5.5 U1 to 6.5 U1

Hello Expert

Customer has vSphere 5.5 U1 and they are wishing to upgrade it to vsphere 6.5 U1. Will the in-place upgrade supported by VMware , for example if we put vsphere 6.5 U1 cd/dvd on the ESXi 5.5 U1 blade and straightaway we can upgrade?? If you can share kb links will be appreciated.

When you say they have "vSphere" are you just saying they have ESXi or they also have vCenter? vSphere is a bundle of vCenter and ESXi, so if they have both, you have to upgrade vCenter first before you can upgrade ESXi. There is extensive upgrade documentation available here which you should read.

Check that stuff is supported.

If it is update vCenter first.

Then update ESXi hosts. 5.5->6.x updates can be done via update manager.

Depending on the complexity of the environment it may make sense to do new installs.
