vSphere V5.1.0, 1157734 to V6U2 upgrade - can I go directly from V5.1.0 to V6U2?

Hi,

We have a 3 host cluster running V5.1.0, 1157734 and want to upgrade it to the latest V6 U2. The compatability and upgrade matrixes suggest to me that I can do this in one jump - from V5U1 direct to V6U2.

Am I being too optomistic?

The vCenter Server is already running V6 U2 and managing the hosts so all I need to do is use the Update Manager to update the hosts and then the VMware tools.

The plan is simple

  • upgrade the 3 hosts, one at a time using VMotion to clear each host in turn
  • upgrade the VMware tools
  • Move on in life!

Thoughts and feedback welcome...

Your upgrade path is supported and your plan look OK, but remember to check if your hardware is on HCL for version 6. And since you have only three host, consider do a clean install.

Thanks for the sanity check.

I'll double check the HCL - the servers are 3 year old HP(E) DL380p Gen8 models with a couple of add in cards. We have the custom HPE V6 U2 ISO and will start with that.
