vMotion

Hello

I have a vSphere cluster that contain ESXi 5.5.0 and ESXi 6.5 hosts and managed by vCenter server 6.5

i would like to upgrade the ESXi 5.5.0 to 6.5. but before the upgrade i would like to migrate the Virtual machines residing on the ESXi 5.5.0 to the ESXi 6.5 hosts

i am wondering if this is feasible and what should i take into consideration.

Thank you Smiley Happy

Yes, you can do this.  Don't upgrade the HW versions of your virtual machines until you a certain that you won't want to move them back to the old 5.5 host.  If you do don't panic there are ways of working around it - Downgrading the virtual machine hardware version in ESX/ESXi (1028019) | VMware KB - just probably easier to avoid the problem in the first place.

6.5 supports everything up to HW version 13, 5.5 supports up to HW version 10 only - Virtual machine hardware versions (1003746) | VMware KB

Hope that's helpful
