vMotion between ESX 4.0 and ESX 3.5 Hosts

We are in the process of planning our upgrade from ESX 3.5 to ESX 4.0 infrastructure. I understand that you can vmotion VM's from 3.5 hosts to 4.0 hosts, however can you migrate from 4.0 hosts to 3.5 hosts. Prior to attempting I know we need to upgrade to vCenter Server 4.0.

yes, vmotion is allowed between the two builds.

Just don't upgrade the guest tools and the virtual hardware before you get all your ESX Hosts onto 4.0

Good Luck!

Yes, you can VMotion machines between 3.5 and 4.0. I upgraded my infrastructure to 4.0 without downtime.

That U can see,the vSphere4 uses a new client ,which called vSphere client. It cannot be used to connect the old ESX Server or ESXi Server.

You have to upgrade free ESXi to Standalone at least to perform cold migration (VM is powered off) and to Enterprise if you want to perform VMotion.

You can put free ESXi to Evaluation mode I suppose, Evaluation equals Enterprise level for 3.5.

vSphere client can be used to connect "old" ESX, but you need Virtual Center Agent license for host to add it to vCenter.
