I was reading the support matrix for vCenter and vOrchestrator and was surprised to see that vCenter is fully supported on SQL 2008 but vOrchestrator is only supported on SQL 2005. As we are trying to migrate everything to SQL 2008, we want to install as much of vSPhere on SQL 2008 as possible. Is it possible/supported to install vSphere on SQL 2008 and then separately install vOrchestrator on SQL 2005? During the vCenter install it appeared to me as if both components were installed at the same time, but maybe that was because I was in a lab environment and went with the built-in SQL Express.
Any word on when vOrchestrator will support SQL 2008? I really dislike VMware can't have common requirements for all of their products. I know vOrchestorator was an acqusition, but still..come on folks! Life is already complicated enough.
vCenter and Orchestrator use their own databases, so you can install vCenter on SQL 2008 and Orchestrator on 2005 without problems.

I suppose that you can put your VCENTER DB an an Remote SQL2008 and the vOrchestrator on an locally installed 2005.
You're right Orchestrator is not supported on SQL2008. But i can't understand why.
In the docs there is nothing mentioned that its not supported to seperate the DB's
on different servers. So it should work fine.
I've installed the Orchestrator DB in my lab on a SQL 2008 without a problem.
But in prod i wouldn't do that.
Hope that helps
