vCenter migration from 6.5 to 7.0 error

Hi,

the migration from vCenter 6.5 to 7 aborts during step 2 "Set up target vCenter Server and start services".

I can SSH into the new vCenter appliance and see that the firstboot script can't start the vmdird service. The service aborts with the messages:

ERROR: DecodeEntry failed (9605) DN:()

ERROR: LoadServerGlobals: (9700)()

In the VMware kb i only find the error du to a time synchronization issue but the time is synced by a NTP server and correct.

Does anyone have an idea?

Thanks and regards,

Chris

Just to clarify and to make sure that we are are in the same page. The NTP Server that you are configuring on the vCenter has to be in sync also with the time of the ESXi Host where you are deploying the new appliance.

Make sure that you have the same time in the original vCenter, the Platform Services Controller (In case external) and the ESXi hosts all over your platform. The KB also says that it can be that you are deploying to an ESXi but DRS moves the VM to another one which has the time misconfigured.

All ESXi hosts are using the same NTP server and they all have the same time.

I know you already saw the KB but have you checked all the logs that are mentioned on it: VMware Knowledge Base ?

Maybe on one of them you will find a different output that points to your issue.

the only common error with the kb is:

ERROR: DecodeEntry failed (9605) DN:()

ERROR: LoadServerGlobals: (9700)()

For some unknown reason the vmware directory service cannot read the migrated mdb files, but I can't find any other log file with more details.

I am not sure if it needs some other files to decrypt / read the ldap files or is there any verbose mode for the vmdir daemon?

What errors are you actually getting on the vmdir log?

the log ends with:

Take a look at this KB where the NTP once is also mentioned but you have multiple issues there: VMware Knowledge Base

And also please take a look at the next file and paste the output: /var/log/firstboot/fbInstall.json

content of /var/log/firstboot/vmafd-firstboot.py_32543_stderr.log:

2020-08-11T19:21:38.398Z

2020-08-11T19:21:38.398Z

Only those timestamps are here, nothing more

Where those timestamps correct at the time the task was done? Does the resolution from that vCenter to the original one works? Forward and reverse.

Can you reach the vCenter over ping and required ports?

yes it all works, even the DNS settings are ok.

though at this stage the migration installer already did shutdown the old VM and changed the IP of the new VM to the final one.
