vCenter Server installation, Domain account , local account and requirement.

Hi,

Can anyone advise regarding the installation of vCenter Server with local account.

Can I install vCenter (5.5) on Windows Server using local account.?Server is already member of Domain. Server will use separate Database but on same box as vCenter Server.

Another question is ..can I install on Workgroup server and then join to domain? What are the dos and don'ts

If I can't use local account, may I know why?

Thanks in advanced

The preferred method is to use a user account instead of a local user account.

As the database is on a remote machine you can enable Windows Authentication on SQL Server and it would provide more security . More Details are available on VMware vSphere 5.1

You would not be able to install vCenter the machine is not joined to the domain

You can use a local admin account on the box to install it however its not recommended.

The ideal case is to use a domain based service account that is exclusive to vCenter. Unless for some odd reason you don't have active directory stick with using a domain account.

sorry but its a prerequist from vmware to use a domain account

On each system that is running vCenter Server, make sure that the domain user account has the following permissions:

Member of the Administrators group

Act as part of the operating system

Log on as a service

One difference when using local user account instead domain account:

If you are logged in as a domain account user, the default Active Directory identity sources are discovered automatically during vCenter Single Sign On installation. If you are logged in as a local account user, Active Directory identity sources are not discovered automatically during vCenter Single Sign On installation.
