vCenter Host Agent Pre-Upgrade Checker

Am I correct in interpreting that this utility is NOT needed if I plan to do a wipe and fresh install of ESXi5  over a  VI3 environment?

I *think* it just looks at patches installed on the hosts.

....Besides the inability to upgrade from esx3.x  directly to esxi5.

Thanks

Hi,

yes, that's right. You will only need this tool if you plan to upgrade an existing installation. If you do a fresh install you can forget this tool.

The vCenter Host Agent Pre-Upgrade Checker produces a report showing known issues that might prevent a successful upgrade of the vCenter Host Agent software. based on the report we can carry on with the vCenter Server upgrade.

Here you dont need to run this tool since you are planning for a fressh install of vSphere 5.0.

Only upgrade part will be VMFS upgrade. Its good to read about the VMFS upgrade to do a smooth migration to VMFS5 from VMFS3.

http://blogs.vmware.com/vsphere/2011/07/new-vsphere-50-storage-features-part-1-vmfs-5.html

Also refer the vSphere ugrade guide.

With this scenario you can do a fresh installation directly to esxi5.0 without problems, but i recommend HCL to check if your hardware have compatibility with ESXi5.0 www.vmware.com/go/hcl .

To do this upgrade read -->http://pubs.vmware.com/vsphere-50/topic/com.vmware.ICbase/PDF/vsphere-esxi-vcenter-server-50-upgrade...

About Agent Pre-Upgrade Checker - http://pubs.vmware.com/vsphere-50/index.jsp?topic=/com.vmware.vsphere.upgrade.doc_50/GUID-CE468E17-1...

Thanks to all

Yes, I've looked at HCL, upgrade guide, Checker, Licensing, Tools and virtual hardware upgrade ... and now another branch to follow - VMFS ...  the more you dig, the more you find.

Thanks
