vCenter 6.0u2 with external MS SQL 2016 database

I've found a customer who has installed their VC database onto a SQL 2016 server. Officially I'm not seeing it as a supported configuration, however vCenter appears to be doing everything it should be doing.

Does anyone know what the deal is with MS SQL 2016 and if there are any issues in doing this?

Answering this in case someone else comes across this...

Essentially VMware are not going to support MS SQL 2016 with 6.0u2 (even 6.5 isn't compatible)  as they are pushing users towards the appliance.

I found this out after speaking with VMware where they said one of the reasons they weren't, was due to the slow uptake of SQL 2016

Can anyone at VMware say when MS SQL 2016 is likely to be covered as supported, and if not, why not?
