hi,

An esxi host can not enter maintenance mode if VMs are up.Is this valid for every esxi version?

When upgrade esxi then esxi is put in maintenance or we boot from dvd,upgrade and reboot.right?

Yes, that's right. Maintenance mode will migrate VMs to other ESXi hosts in the cluster. If this is a standalone host, VMs will not migrate and the host will not enter maintenance mode.

Place the host in maintenance mode --> Attach the ISO and boot from it for upgrade. Some of the options are listed here --> ESXi upgrade overview
