Hello and welcome to the forums.

What version of ESX do you currently have? The VMFS version in vsphere is 3.33. The new virtual machine hardware in vSphere is version 7. Either way, your current vm should be able to move up without any problems.

Good Luck!

Virtual machines created on ESX 3.5 will definitely move up to vSphere without any issues.

This kb article about VMFS versions explains it all, but basically you all VMFS versions work with any version of ESX 3.0.0 and later. That is, ESX 3.0.0 can run a virtual machine from VMFS 3.33 and ESX 4 can run virtual machines from VMFS 3.21 volumes.

Once you're on vSphere you can upgrade vms to version 7.

You have to be careful though as they can not be moved from v7, back to v4 . . so you will NOT be able to use them on 3.5 again . . even if you snapshot them!

One day I will virtualise myself . . .

Once your vm's are running on the ESX 4.0 vSphere host, you need to install the latest vmtools and then shut the vm's down and right click on each one and select 'Upgrade Virtual Hardware'. This will change the virtual machine version from 4 to 7. Once you power each one on again, windows or the guest o/s will install drivers for the new hardware and then want a reboot. After that you are upgraded to the latest.

Hope this helps.
