upgrade from vsphere 4.0 to update1

Hi,

I have been reading through the upgrade guides for vsphere to go from 4.0 to update1 but I can't clarify exactly what is needed.

I am guessing I need to do the following:

1.) upgrade vcenter to update1? (if so do I just download the update from vmware?)

2.) upgrade the esx servers (ideally I would like to use esxupdate as I only have 5 esx servers, is this ok?)

3.) power on vm's and upgrade vmware tools

I have looked into using vum. It has been a while since the last updates were downloaded. I ran the "patch download schedule" and it showed up vmware esx4 update1. I added this to my baseline and excluded all other esx patches as I just want to roll this out. The thing is I am not sure if the patch (update1) has actually downloaed to my vcenter server (where my vum server is). How do I know if it has?. Also If I use this route would I just click remediate on the esx host that I want to update at this point?

I am using hp dl380 g5's so if anyone knows of any issues with update1 with these servers please met me know!!!

many thanks,

Paul

Hi

thanks for this.

Do I need to upgrade my virtual center server before I go to update1a on my esx hosts?.

Also is this methond ok for using when you use a virtual center?

many thanks

Yes. But IMHO the best way to update servers is to use Update Manager. It also can update VMware Tools in VMs.

The only thing you need to download manually - new vCenter, nt can be downloaded from VMware site. Then install update manager and it will download all patches automatically.
