Hi Abhishek,

Welcome to the VMware VMTN Communities.

I will try to explain the differences to the VMware products that you asked and some more:

  • VMware vSphere is the enterprise virtualisation product. Probably the one you want to look at first. It uses ESXi servers as hosts on which you can run virtual machines as guest.
  • VMware vCenter Server is the management server for VMware vSphere that adds a lot of features. You probably want to use VMware vCenter Server if you have more than one ESXi server.
  • VMware Infrastructure is just the old name of VMware vSphere.
  • VMware vSphere Client is the client software to manage VMware ESXi server or VMware vSphere Server.
  • VMware vCloud products are build on top of VMware vSphere and you can use them to build a private cloud or access a public cloud.
  • VMware View is a virtual desktop infrastructure.
  • VMware Workstation is virtualization software for Windows client computers. With this product you can run virtual machines on a Windows client computer like on Windows 7.
  • VMware Fusion is virtualization software for MAC OS X. With this product you can run virtual machines on a MAC OS X computer.
  • VMware Server is virtualization software for Windows server. With this product you can run virtual machines on a Windows Server computer. But this product is end of life.

A good place to start might be the Solutions button on the www.vmware.com homepage.

If you want to try VMware vSphere and VMware vCenter Server then you can get a free 60 days evaluation license.

Regards, Robert

The best option I think is to install VMware Workstation and run that on your laptops. In VMware Workstation you can run ESXi servers as virtual machines. To test advanced things like clusters or vMotion you need shared storage between at least two ESXi servers. You can make shared storage with running for instance OpenFiler as a virtual machine. This will make a home lab for you to learn VMware vSphere.

Moved thread to the Training area, as it is not related to a Community Website problem.

The Training area is more for discusssions about VMware training, rather than technical queries about vSphere or Workstation.

Linux knowleged would not be required as most of the task in VMware can be done in GUI. If  you do have some skill it will be helpfull.
