We are wiping our vCenter server and reinstalling vCenter 4.1 on Windows 2008 Server with SQL Server 2008. Is it worth it to try and preserve the data from the old SQL Express server? Or can we just go with a new database from scratch? Thanks.
If ur old database is working fine and u would need the performance statistics, then its worth to take the backup of DB and follow the Upgrade guide for migrating ur exisiting DB to newly created server.
If not then its easier and less time consuming to go with fresh install.
This depends on the size of your environment etc.
If you have loads of resource pools etc configured and need to keep these, as well as many permissions / roles and so on, it will take a lot of effort to rebuild this config from scratch. If howevere you have a small, flat setup, then there is no need to hang on to the old config.
I like rebuilding from scratch where I can and re-documenting and improving my build as I go along, but it requires a little more time, research and documentation.
