new VCS4.1 to upgrade esx3.5 update5

Hi,

In our environment we have vcs2.5 managing esx3.5 update5 clusters and esx2.5 servers. Our present vcs server running on win2k3 32 bit os.

to upgrade esx3.5 cluster to esx4.1 we r planning to install vcs4.1 on new box win2k8 64 bit os.Also we will install update manager and all db on same box.

We are planning to disconnect all esx3.5 (in cluster) servers from existing vcs2.5 server and add it to newly vcs4.1 and then do the esx upgradation from 3.5 to 4.1.

Ofcourse for that we hv to destroy existing cluster in vcs2.5 and need to create new cluster on vcs4.1.

Presently we are not using any resource pool, only using hA and DRS.

What will be the impact if we go for a freash environment without migrating existing database from vcs2.5 to 4.1.

Not much, you would lose historical performance data, but disconnecting out of the old and into the new is a good approach.

As for your VCMS upgrade, unless you start with a new DB instance, ensure you have a good backup. Also, don't forget vCenter 4.1 will require a 64bit DSN, while VUM still requires a 32bit.

Everything that is in the VC database would be lost like (performance charts, cluster & resource pool settings, custom roles etc). However if you have a basic configuration with just ESX hosts without any resource pools then you should be fine.

Check if you have some advanced setting in your HA.

Disable HA before disconnect (you can also simple connect in the new cluster without disconnect them).

You can use Windows Server 2008 R2, it works fine with vCenter 4.1.
