migrate VMs to new VCentre 4.1 without powering off

Hi all

We are in process of moving from vmware 3.5 to vsphere 4.1.

In our new  vsphere environment so far we have migrated and upgraded 3 ESX servers.

To get them into the new environment all we had to do was disconnect them from the old VC server, and add them to the new 4.1 server.

To start moving the VMs - do we have to power them off to remove them from inventory on our old server?

Or is there a way to migrate them without any interuptions?

Thanks so much

Hi,

is it possible to import the old esx host in your new environment?

If so, you could easy vmotion your vm´s to your new hosts and remove or upgrade the old hosts after all virtuall machines are on the new hosts

This is possible without a vm shutdown.

If not

Are you using the same shared storage on your new and old environment?  If so, you could power off your vm and register the vm on your new host an power on.

Thats fast so you need only a few minutes for one machine.

Hi

storage is all shared, so can be seen in both the new environment and the old.

Are you saying that we keep the ESX server powered on in 3.5 environment.

Remove the ESX server from inventory without migrating any VMS off it.

Import the ESX server into 4.1 environment and it will see the VMS that were running on it?

Thanks
