We are planning to upgrade our VM environment to VSphere soon. I downloaded the Upgrade Prerequistes Checklist and looking at the first item. In that, I was checking the "Software Compatibility Matrix" guide. Well, in the Vcenter, see that vmware esx, 3.5.0, 110268 and I don't know how to find out the vmware server version to read from this Software Matrix guide.

Welcome to the Forums - I believe the information will be found here - http://www.vmware.com/pdf/vsphere4/r40_u1/vsp_40_u1_upgrade_guide.pdf - I believe as long as you are on ESX 3.5 you will be able to upgrade - and if you ar eon Update 5 you will need to go to Update 1 of vSPhere -

First check that your hardware is in HCL for vSphere:

Then check again the compatibility matrix:

Make sure though to upgrade vCenter first to the latest version and then upgrade ESX. Before you upgrade ESX make sure your servers are sill on the HCL.

Thanks for all the answers. Could anyone give me a direct answer as to where can I find the version of vmware server in my environment? What is the current vCenter version? In the software matrix, (in the bottom ) it said for #1 ( the vSphere client may not the correct the first time and then it will be correct in the later time) What does that mean?

Using the VI client, connect to the VirtualCenter server and select Help, then About.

What is the current vCenter version?

The current version is vCenter Server 4.0 U1.

The vSphere client comes with vCenter Server as well as with ESX(i). This way it is possible to have different versions. However, at this time the latest version which came with vCenter Server 4.0 U1 is the same as the one which came with ESX(i).

BTW: When updating, make sure to have the "old" licence server up and running until you are done with all the ESX updates. Otherwise the ESX 3.x servers will be in an unlicensed state, resulting in several possible issues. (No power on of VMs, no vMotion, ...)

The videos AndreTheGiant pointed to explain how to configure the old license server in vCenter 4.0.

If you keep this in mind and you update to vCenter server 4.0 U1 as well as ESX(i) 4.0 U1, there should be no issues.
