data migration tool question

We are wiping our vCenter server and rebuilding it with Windows 2008 Server x64, and then plan on reinstalling vCenter and SQL 2008 Server.  If we use the data migration tool to backup the database of the existing SQL Express, is there a way we can turn around and use the data migration tool to re-install the database into the new SQL 2008 Server, or is this like trying to mix apples and oranges.  Thanks.

You can not use the migration tool for SQL Server, only SQL Express.

That being said, you can detach the SQL db, and attach the file to SQL 2008 when you've installed it on your destination server.  Just make sure you have the vcenter SSL keys as well.
