What do I need to set up a lab environment?

Hello all,

Firstly, apologies if this is in the wrong section and is a too basic question.  If so can you direct me to the relevant, newbie section.

I am looking at setting up a home lab environment at home to serve 2 purposes:

1. To learn how to use VMware

2. To set up a lab for MS Certification

To me, there seems to be a bewildering array of vm products and I was hoping for some guidance as to which product to use.  I currently only have a Dell desktop running Windows 8 64bit that is the family machine.

1. Is there a VMware product I can install on this machine without wiping the hard drive?

2. Do I need a processor with SLAT technology as I do with MS Hyper-V?

3. Is there a guide to the differences between the different products with what they are best for?

Thanks

Tony
