Hello all,
I've been spending a few days, trying to get answers with regards to Vsphere 5.
My company will be buying the kit shortly and I have to impliment it for this weekend.
One of the issues, which I can't seem to find either here on the disucssions or the millions of documents that are out there:
Does Vsphere 5 have its own converter: P2V?
Or do I use the "VMware vCenter Converter Standalone 5.0"?
I did install the standalone, and did a "live" conversion.
but In the drop down choice on where to install it to, I didn't see any vsphere information,
I did see "VMware Infrastructure Virtual machine" <- vsphere???
so I created vmware server 2.0 and saved it to a remote share.
So to confirm, I basically have to use the standalone then?
Yes!
also if I buy the vsphere 5.0 kit, (for 3 servers), does that or does it not include vCenter? (still don't know what that is).
The Essentials Kits as well as the Acceleration Kits include vCenter Server. It's just the Converter which is not integrated in vCenter anymore.

Welcome to the Community and the world of virtualization - Yes and yes - vCenter does have a converter built but the more robust version is the Standalone Converter - check out page 46 of http://www.vmware.com/pdf/convsa_50_guide.pdf to learn how place the new VM on an ESXi server
Yes and yes - vCenter does have a converter built ...
Not anymore with vCenter Server 5.0.
from http://www.vmware.com/support/vsphere4/doc/vsp_vcc_42_rel_notes.html
VMware vSphere 4.1 is the last major release for VMware vCenter Converter plug-in. VMware will continue to provide technical support for vCenter Converter through the end of its support lifecycle. VMware will continue to update and support the free vCenter Converter Standalone product, which enables conversions from sources such as physical machines, VMware and Microsoft virtual machine formats, and certain third-party disk image formats.

If it is the Essentials Kit ( then yes vCenter is included - vCeneter allows you to manage mutiple ESXi hosts from a single location - this might help show the differences between the different kits - http://www.vmware.com/products/datacenter-virtualization/vsphere/small_business_editions_comparison....
