Hi,
Vmware used to be such a simple install, create a third stand alone server, not joined to your virtualised AD and install vcenter or use the appliance. Now Vmware seems to have over complicated the process by adding SSO and the stupidly complicated, clunky and slow web gui.
Am i missing something really obvious here? Is there still a simple way to install Vmware and run it like i used to? Unpon trying to install SSO i get loads of errors because my vcenter servers are not on the domain, but i don't want them to be, if i loose my AD because my vm's have gone down the last thing i want is to be struggling to login to vmware to sort them out!!!
Please tell me if im missing something or has vmware really got that bad now??
Kris
Hi Friend,
Installation just works fine even if you did not add your installation VM to AD.
There are 4 components that are important to be installed.
1. SSO
2. Web client
3. Inventory service
4. vCenter server
If you are installing on windows VM, You get one option called "Simple install", this will install all the components for you, just monitor & select appropriate options/password etc. (This is suitable when you want to install, everything in a VM):::::VMware vSphere 5.1
Refer:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kLPezl8TaYk
All above components can be installed one at a time by your-self once by one, even you can use separate VM per component.
Also refer:VMware KB: Methods for installing vCenter Server 5.5
If you are installing vCenter appliance (Linux VC), its very simple & as usual.
VMware KB: Downloading and deploying the vCenter Server Appliance 5.x
vSphere 5.5 Documentation Center
The vCenter Server Appliance has the following default user names
■ | |
■ | administrator@vsphere.local with the password that you entered during installation for the vCenter Single Sign-On administrator account in the built-in domain. |
administrator@vsphere.local is default user for windows Vc as well.
You can install "Desktop client" separately if you need, VI client will not have new features introduced in Vc 5.5 , all other legacy features are available as usual.
Yes, Web client is bit slow as compared to VI client. We can expect good GUI performance in upcoming releases.
Let me know if you need any other info/help.
