VUM with VCSA

I'm about ready to integrate the vCenter Server Appliance into our environment, but I have more questions before making the leap.

(I am performing a clean install of vSphere 5.5 - not an upgrade from 4.1 - which is our current environment)

I keep reading that VUM does not work with VCSA. But you can create a Windows VM and install VUM there, then install a plugin(?) to integrate it into VCSA. How does this work exactly? I am doing a clean install of ESXi 5.5 on 3 new Hosts. I will be installing the vCenter Appliance as a VM. I also plan on creating a VM to act as the vSphere Update Manager. Can I utilize that single VM (as the VUM) and use it to upgrade all the ESXi Hosts? Or do I need to build 3 VUMs to update each Host? All this vSphere documentation is making my eyes blurry!

HI sarkmo

Find answer below.

Can I utilize that single VM (as the VUM) and use it to upgrade all the ESXi Hosts?

ANS > Yes, One VUM server is enough to handle updates/upgrades on all residing esxi host in a same vcenter server. . So no Worry.

do I need to build 3 VUMs to update each Host?

ANS> No, No need to build 3 vms for your 3 host.

Thanks.

As said you will only need one VUM.

During VUM installation it will ask you for the IP/Hostname and credentials for your vCenter. It will then automaticly install the VUM extension on the vCenter.

When you connect to the vCenter with your C# vSpere client, you can install the client plugin from Plug-Ins -> manage plug-ins. (The C# client is still needed to configure patch-baselines etc.)

no worry. you dont need any extra license. if you have your existing one. you can use it to upgrade your hosts and vcenters components. to do the same.

Dear Anjani_Kumar,

I have a hardware dell power edge for esxi 6.0 upgrade as given below.

ModelProcessorType
PowerEdge R710Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5620 @ 2.40GHz
PowerEdge R320Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5-1410 0 @ 2.80GHz

I could see the in the compatibility matrix in VMware Compatibility Guide - System Search, however unable to find the matching processor type in the list.

Does that mean these processors are not compatible thought the hardware model is compatible?

Please suggest.

Regards,

I've been following this discussion and I have a related question.  I work in an environment with 28 vCenters.  Some are appliances, some are Windows Servers.  I have a designated Windows Server 2012 R2 which I use as a 'jumping off'point to reach any of those vCenters.

Question:  Can I install VUM once on that 'jump off' server, which would be using a full version of SQL Server 2014 - not Express, and then register the instance with each of the vCenters?  Or do I have to install a separate VUM with each separate vCenter?

This is my first time with an environment this large and I've already observed (after 3 weeks on the job), that there's a LOT of updating/upgrading to do.  Some vCenters are 4.1, some 5.0 or 5.5.  I'll be taking them all to version 6.0 Update 2 over the next few months.  Once everything is uniform and properly remediated, then perhaps the move to 6.5 (or possibly 7.0 by then) will be more uniform and a lot smoother.

Thank you in advance for your help with this.
