VMware vSphere Host Update Utility

Hi!

I'm getting this wierd message "Patching this host version is not supported by vSphere Host Update Utility" when connecting to a ESX4 host (ESX 4.0.0 build 164009) - Also see attached screenshot...

Am I missing something or is this an error? Shouldn't I be able to patch my ESX4 hosts with this utility?

Hope someone can help!

Kind regards

K

Why not using the VUM for this task and have you host local storage?

Hi!

Thank's for your reply!

...What is VUM?

I'm new to vSphere4, but have used Update Manager VC plug-in (Is that VUM??) on Vi3.5... Can't seem to find the plug-in in vCenter4 though - so I thought that the "Host Update Utility" whas a replasement for the "old" plugin?

All my hosts have local storage... Where do I find VUM?

Kind regards

Yes VUM, is VMWare Update Manager.

How many hosts do you want to upgrade?

You can create some baseline to update you hosts and if you have existing vms, to update the tools and the hardware!

Hi again!

All my hosts are already upgraded to ESX4 (vSphere) - and all vm's are alreadu up to date with vmware tools! ...what I want to do, is to patch my ESX4 hosts.

Could you point me to where I can download VUM for vCenter4 / ESX4?

You can also directly go into your VC directory VMware-VIMSetup-en-4.0.0-162902\updateManager then run VMware vCenter Update Manager.msi.

Thanks,

Samir

Shouldn't you still be able to use host update utility to patch hosts (already at 4.0)? I only have a couple of hosts that is why I'm choosing the utility over update manager.

Seems they have no plans to get it to support. Kinda a rubbish solution when you might not want to setup VUM in your environment or need to desperately update a machine and don;t have VUM setup yet
