Updated to sphere and my hosts are now running ESX4
Have 2 old guests running Windows 2000.
Both fail the VMware Tools update with and error message saying it must be Win 95/98 NT4 SP6
Tried both using Update Manager and manual install.
Currently it is the VMware Tools from 3.5 Update 4 that is installed
These both guests have been updated from NT4 SP6.
Updated a couple of WinXPSP3 guest without any problems.
Have anyone updated Windows 2000 guests successfully, if so what I'm i doing wrong?
try shutting down the guest(s) in question, right click and upgrade virtual hardware. After that power the VM(s) back on and see if you can get the tools installed.
Vmware KB states you should upgrade vmtools before upgrading virtual hardware to version 7.
It states this is differtent from the past versions.
The instructions say you should update tools first and before updating to hardware 7 else some network settings are lost i think.
I need to read up on whats lost if you first update hardware before i try it.
Again worked on a couple of XPSP3 that I did tools and then hardware on.
I understand what the instructions say, but I'm just throwing out ideas. I had the same problem with one of our W2k Pro guests and it worked for me.
Ok, great
I will try it.
Tnx
I updated the hardware as you suggested, but I still get the same error message when trying to install VMware Tools
Its like tools don't detect the correct OS or something!http://communities.vmware.com/images/emoticons/confused.gif!
are you doing an automated update or interactive? Can you post the exact error, maybe we can find a KB surrounding the error.

Are really up to date? Rollup update is installed?

My stupid misstage
As i previously said they where upgraded from NT4, and guess what they where still set as Guest OS=NT4 in WMware and I never changed to Win2000 after the update.
Seems like 3.5 Tools did care about that but vSphere is more sensitive.
After changing to Guest OS= WIndows 2000 VMware Tools installs without any problems
Thanks all for trying to help, now I will go and hide under a rock
You know, believe it or not, I was going to ask you to edit settings and go to options and check the OS. However you were one step ahead of me.
Glad to see you got it resolved. Don't forget to mark the thread as answered.
