VMware ESXi freezes during installation

I'm having problems installing VMware ESXi on a HP dl380 g3. I am accessing the server using it's iLO interface. I boot off the cd and choose the ESXi Installer. It then loads the following modules (vmkboot.gz, vmkernel.gz, sys.vgz, cim.vgz, ienviron.tgz, image.tgz, install.tgz). After this it says "Booting MBI=0x000100d8, entry=0x00100212" and freezes. By freezes I mean my keyboard locks up so I can't even turn caps lock on or off. I have let it sit for 10 min and it still doesn't respond. I tested the cd by trying to install it in a virtual machine and it seemed to work fine.So it doesn't seem to be a problem with the disk.

Any ideas on what could be wrong?

Thanks,

John

The CPUs listed don't look like 64-bit CPUs. I couldn't find a solution for this kind of hardware. My work-around, though, is to just continue using ESXi 3.5 on these and ESXi 4 on the newer/64-bit servers.

John,

Have you checked the HCL list? Is it still a supported platform for ESXi 4.0 :

The dl380 g5 and g6 are listed as supported, however the g3 is not listed. Does this make much of a difference?

In another thread, someone mentioned that ESXi 4 requires 64-bit CPU. That could be it. I had the same problem as you yesterday on HP DL360 G3.

I'll double check but I'm pretty sure my processors are 64 bit.

Did you find a solution to your problem?

You are correct. I assume that these processors would be 64 bit but apparently not. I'll take a look at getting the older version then.

Thanks,

John
