VCenter 5.1 installation error

Hello,

I have an ESX 5.1 with 2 VMs (windows 2008 R2 64bit): one for Active directory and DNS however the other one for Vcenter.
the two machine is accessible and we can ping the ip and the hostname as well.
from Vcenter machine we tried the below:
ping IP of AD VM---> there is a reply
ping hostname of Vcenter---> there is a reply

from AD machine:
ping IP of VCenter VM---> there is a reply
ping hostname of AD---> there is a reply

and also we noticed that the ip address is registered in reserve lookup zone after adding a zone.

the problem appeared when i tried to install the Inventory Service of vmware. i received the below message:
"could not contact looup service. please check VM_SSOreg.log in system temporary folder for details"

and if I checked the log of the installation I obtain only one message of error "unable to connect to server".
I have downloaded many copies of Vcenter but we get the same result appeared.

Steps done:
1- I added the IP address for both machines c:\windows\systems32\drivers\etc.
the below message was disappeared:
"The Fully Qualified Domain Name cannot be resolved. If you continue the installation, some features might not work correctly" i has appeared many times during my installation.
2- Create 2 Vms on another subnet of the network with different IP address, the same message re-appeared"could not contact looup service. please check VM_SSOreg.log in system temporary folder for details""
3- I installed the Vcenter 5.0, it was installed without any problem. when i tried to upgrade and install the inventory service (because it recommended to upgrade inventory service before upgrade vcenter ), again i received ""could not contact looup service. please check VM_SSOreg.log"
4- downloaded many copies of vcenter 5.1 from vmware site but we obtain the same result.
5- reboot VMs many times and check the connectivity between two VMs(there is a reply from the ip and hostname).

any idea please.

Hi,

just to inform you that the error is appeared during the installation of inventory service. the sso is intalled without any problem. but when we tried to install inventory service the message appeared.

"could not contact looup service. please check VM_SSOreg.log in system temporary folder for details"

when we checked the logs(VM_SSOreg.log), we have the message "could not connect to server".

And without this operation, we can not proceed with the installation of Vcenter.

what did you mean by this logs? it is related to inventory service?

Please do check >%Program Files%\VMware\Infrastructure\SSOServer\logs\LookupServer.log

thanks.

PS: 1- fresh installation

2- I have created a new server and installed Vcenter 5.0 but when we tried to upgrade to 5.1, the same message appeared again (the inventory servcie should be upgrade before vcenter).  ---> i think this step can resolve the problem but unfortunately we get the same result.

thanks

Hello Andre,

yes, i've checked this link ealier but it is for SSO troubleshooting. in my case, the sso is installed without any problem, but the problem is appeared during the installation of inventory service which is recommended before the installation of vcenter.

Is there any way to install vcenter without inventory service? what is the reasons of this error?

thanks,

I am assuming that you are doing a custom install. Correct? If yes, i would try the below steps:

1.Try to resolve the FQDN (Fully Qualified Domain Name) of the SSO Server that you installed earlier from the Server on which you are installing the Inventory Service. I would also see that the clocks (SSO,AD and Inventory Server) are synched

2.If the above is successfull, move to the next step, else register the SSO Server name and IP in DNS and try installing Inventory Service again.

3.I would try to restart the SSO Service and try installing Inventory Service again.

4.Ensure during Inventory Service Installation,On the vCenter Single Sign On Information page, you are providing the SSO Administrator user name (default is admin@System-Domain) and password. Ensure that the Lookup Service URL is correctly specified, this will take the form of

https://<SSOServer FQDN or IP>:7444/lookupservice/sdk

Hope this helps

Thx

As Venkat mentioned correctly, this issue is due to the DNS lookup issue.

What does your "nslookup <Hostname>" output look like?

What Database do you use for previous VC install?

Have you tried giving IP address instead of FQDN name as lookup service URL?

Though I have posted the same ques in an another which has not got any reply yet, I thought posting this here would also make sense.

Hello Everyone,

I am trying to install Vcenter 5.5 on Win2K8 R2 x64 based system. This system has Intel dual processor and 192 GB of memory.

The system is added to the lab domain and forward/reverse look up zones is also updated. Necessary host file entries have also been made and the server is reached by it's FQDN from other systems.

The password of the SSO contains alphabets, number and '$' (I have seen special characters in password making issue with some of the vmware products).

Tried entering the IP address in the URL instead of FQDN, changing the user name to 'admin@domain.name' instead administrator@domain.name.

Kindly suggest something and guide me in this, this is urgent and any help would be highly appreciated.

Note : I have verified the forward/reverse look up zone entry for the server in the DNS. Also the installation does detects the FQDN of the server but does not proceed and gives the same error. In my case, I am using a single server for SSO, inventory services and Vcenter server.

Kindly provide any suggestion/steps to come out of this.SSO_registry_error.jpg

Hi Taou,

I came across same scenario while installing a vcenter, however it was damn easy to find the cause.

wait for my next reply and i will collect few info from this blog and you.

1.what is vcenter version:_____

2. (This is very important ) what is the  Operating system and service pack:_____

3. C:drive space:_____

4. No of vCPU :_____

5.Are you installing on the same drive as a base machine O/S drive
