Hi, we're looking to upgrade our vCenters from 5.1 to 5.5, and currently running SSO. As I understand the SSO db goes away in 5.5. What happens to this upon upgrade?
What exactly do you mean by "SSO db goes away in 5.5"? The upgrade is a normal upgrade and will not disrupt any existing configurations. All the configurations will stay intact and will be carried over to the next version.
This below KB Article thoroughly explains the concepts and themethods of upgrading to 5.5. Give it a read and it will solve your doubts
VMware KB: Methods of upgrading to vCenter Server 5.5
How is SSO 5.5 different from SSO 5.1?
The architecture remains the same. However, there are a lot of changes in SSO 5.5. To get a list of all the changes, see What’s New in VMware vSphere 5.5 platform.
What are the key capabilities of SSO 5.5?
Thoughts?
Yes SSO 5.5 does not need a DB. But its a different case in the upgradation. You will not do any changes in the configuration. You will run a SSO installation(5.5) and it will detect a instance already running(5.1) and upgrade it.
If you install a new vCenter 5.5 then you will not have to build a DB for SSO.
So after SSO upgrade to 5.5, existing SSO db continues to be used, or no?
And the order to do this would be:
Upgrade SSO to 5.5
Upgrade vCenter 5.1 to 5.5
Upgrade SRM
Upgrade Hosts
Correct?
The KB article from which you posted a small part in a previous reply also contains the answer to the question, what's going to happen with the SSO database (see Upgrade Questions). For the order of upgrading the different components, see http://kb.vmware.com/kb/2057795.

You created a new word: "upgradation" - May I use it? :smileylaugh:
I'm afraid it's a English word
Upgradation | Define Upgradation at Dictionary.com
I did not create it. Are you not a native speaker of English?
I understand. Sounds kind of like "Doing the needful" and "Performant" - I'm not poking fun. Just saying it sounds made-up. Urban Dictionary: upgradation
