Upgrading license on ESXi host to a vSphere Standard license

On an ESXi host using the free version, I understand that to have this managed by our current vCenter Server (which is a vCenter Server 4 Standard license) we need to upgrade the license on the ESXi host to a vSphere Standard license. First of all is this correct in what i'm thinking? I know there is another option using the vSphere Essentials bundle but this only covers 3 hosts from what i've read, and we have 4 ESXi hosts we want to manage, and also we'd prefer to have them all managed under the one vCenter server if possible.

Secondly, if that is right, is it as simple as putting in the new license key on the ESXi host, and then I will be able to manage them through our current vCenter server (which also manage our ESX hosts)? Or would it need to be a complete wipe + install of the different version of ESX on each of the hosts?

Thanks

you are absolutely correct and it is that simple. Just enter the new key on the host through the vSphere client and add it to vcenter.

The standard license is the one you want.

Sorry just to be sure in what I need to do - when you say add the license through the vSphere client do you mean on our current vCenter Server or on the ESXi host itself?

Thanks

Hi,

Two ways of doing it.

1. connect to the ESXi host with vSphere client and goto "configuration" - "licensing" and enter the key

2. Add the key to central vCenter License server. - Then add the ESXi host to vcenter and assign the key to it.
