Hi All,
First time post and really in a bind. Need some help fixing one of our esx hosts that we tried upgrading using the host upgrade utility. We have 3 esx hosts, two of which upgraded perfectly fine. The last one will not boot past the "GRUB Loading stage2" prompt. My support contract ran out 4 weeks ago without my knowledge so no help on that front. Any ideas in the mean time until i can get my support contract renewed? In a worst case i can reload the system, but would really like to not have to. Thanks everyone
Meant to include the following information about environment. Dell 2950's, 16gig ram, 72 gig drives, Fiber attached SAN for VM storage, ESX 3.5U3 (two have been upgraded successfully to vsphere 4). 3rd host is not taking the upgrade to vsphere 4 and stuck at that grub loading message.
Thanks again.
Decided to rebuild the esx host in question and apply a host profile. Have i mentioned ESX rules
If you have more than one server with the same symptoms, it could be an unsupported controller. A new install is a good way to fix this, but you will lose any custom settings, vSwitches, etc. You can try to boot to a linux rescue CD ad try the following commands:
chroot /mnt/sysimage
cat /boot/grub/grub.conf
If this looks good, then do:
grub-install

Careful. We don't want to learn from this.

please update the Upgrade approach or method you have used? if you used, VUM or vSphere Host Update Utility you might have recieved a Failure message. if so, at what precentage of Upgrade (u can see it in progress bar) you recieved the failure message?
