Upgrade from 3.5 to 4i

Having read the upgrade document i'm a little unsure on how to upgrade from ESX 3.5 to vSphere i

It look like I can use VCenter 4 update manager to perform an inplace upgrade but does this include the i option given I'm not currently running ESX 3.5i

You can not "upgrade" ESX to ESXi, no matter what versions. The only possible ways to upgrade are: ESX3.5 -> ESX 4.1, ESXi 3.5 -> ESXi 4.1.

If you want to move from ESX to ESXi then only clean installation is possible.

So if I have a 5 node cluster, can I upgrade one host from ESX 3.5 to 4i?

Will the cluster still work?

This will be a requirement of my Change Control.

The other 4 hosts would be upgraded in the following days / weeks.

Yes, ESX 3.5 and ESXi 4.1 can work together. But you have to upgrade vCenter first.
