I have ESX 3.5 host sitting on old HW (IBM x346) with life vm, I want to upgrade this host to a newer box (IBM x3650) however the newer box will be ESX 4.0, and I want to keep same configuration, same hostname as in the old box. Any idea of how this can be done??? Thank you
Can you bring up the new host with a temporary IP address? Once you're done migrating the VMs you can shutdown the old host and then update the hostname / IP address on the new host.

Moved to upgrade forum (but is not an upgrade, just a migration).
Make a backup of you VMs.
Take a screenshot of network configuration.
Power off your host.
Install the new one, with same name and IP.
Replicate the networking configurarion.
Restore the VMs.
