I just upgraded esx servers from 3.5 to 4 with mscs clustered virtual machines (across boxes) residing on them.
Is it required/safe to upgrade hardware version of the virtual machines?
All other requirements regarding mscs and vsphere 4 (storage configuration, compatibility, etc) are met.
Required? No. But you should arrange for that upgrade at a convinient time. It gives you the latest hardware options and with future ESX versions you might need to have to have a HW 7 guest to be able to migrate.

What storage, are you using?....FC or ISCSI
In Virtual Hardware 7.....you have to stick with LSI Logic SAS adapter for FC SAN.....ISCSI is strictly not supported...

The OS is 2k3 SP2.
Just curious how this went for you? We have a few mscs setups that need the virtual hardware upgraded.
I haven't done the upgrade yet.
As soon as i do it, i will post the results.
