Upgrade ESX 3.5 to 4.0: No unzip ESX 3.5.0 #1 SMP Release build-158874

I downloaded esxupgrade-4.0.0-208167.zip and esx-DVD-4.0.0-208167.iso

The attempt to unzip esxupgrade-4.0.0-208167.zip failed! No unzip executable.

I unzipped the file on my desktop and got esxupgrade.sh.

Unfortunately there is ZIP code inside the shell script to be unzipped.

BusyBox v1.2.1 has gunzip which does not work.

Is there a solution? This is not the first time I had such problems with the

free version, which I use for test purposes

VMware has changed the way upgrades are done in vSphere compared to how you used to be able to do upgrades in VI3. You will need to use the vSphere Host Update utility from you vSphere client on your Windows desktop to upgrade a standalone ESXi 3.5 host to vSphere (aka ESX 4).

Start on Page 71 here: http://www.vmware.com/pdf/vsphere4/r40_u1/vsp_40_u1_upgrade_guide.pdf

There is a lot more about upgrades on the upgrade center at vmware.com and I recommend reading the release notes for any known issues and to verify what to download too:

http://www.vmware.com/support/vsphere4/doc/vsp_esxi40_u1_rel_notes.html

As always verify the requirements and HCL for you hardware.

Hope that helps

To upgrade from 3.x to 4.x you have to use Host Update Utility or VUM 4.0.

See the upgrade guide, as written before.
