Upgrade / Downgrade licences

Hi all,

I need a confirmation that VMware licences can be moved from v3 to v4 or from v4 to v3 as we want.

Only use the portal and migrate licences.

Exemple :

I have 8 licences in VI3 and 12 in V4.

I want to convert my 12 licences V4 to VI3 and centralized all my ESX in Virtual Center 2.5, and had a first stabilized platform.

After, I would upgrade all my ESX to V4, and so upgrade my licences from the portal and regenerate a licence file.

Is it possible to manage our licences from VI3 to V4 or V4 to VI3 ?

BR

Thx

You can upgrade your old VI3 licenses to vSphere if you had active support when vSphere was made available (end of May).

You can downgrade vSphere licenses to VI3 and upgrade back to vSphere without problems.

Hi Anton,

Ok, but if not, if my licences are older than may 2009 we have to pay anything ? :smileymischief:

Your licenses can be june 2008 or even december 2006. The only requirement to upgrade them - active support for them. Even if you have no active support now, but you had till end of may 2009 you can upgrade.

Otherwise you should buy support now.

You can upgarde / downgrade as you like,

The only issue is that to downgrade, you'll need to call the licesning center - you can do the upgrade online,

One day I will virtualise myself . . .

There is an upgrade path from VI3 to vSphere4. Also, new vSphere Licenses come with a downgrade right to VI3, have a look here, too:

Hi all,

Thx Troy, this link helps me yes Smiley Wink

For Bulletprooffool :

To downgrade your license:

  1. Log into the License Portal at .

  2. Click Manage product licenses. Click Downgrade.

  3. Choose the order you want to downgrade and click Continue.

On the Confirmation page you have a chance to review the downgrade operation.

  4. Click Confirm on the warning dialog that appears to proceed with the downgrade operation.

A dialog is displayed while the operation is in progress.

Note: Downgrades are not processed immediately. It takes approximately 30 minutes to complete the operation.

  5. Click OK to continue.

  6. When the downgrade is complete you can click the VI3 licenses tab on the portal for the downgraded licenses.

Note: The

downgrade option is not available with ESXi 4 Single Server, vSphere 4

Essentials, and vSphere 4 Essentials (Plus). Only whole orders can be

downgraded.

Note: Licenses displayed on vSphere/vCenter portal are not decreased or affected.

So no need an intervention of "VMware licences call center".

My last question, is when my support licences was activated, if we have a support. This is visible on the portal ?

Not mine, those of a partner.

Thx to all.

Slightly confused - We have downgraded our V4 licences to V3 as per your example in kb1010533 but when we go to the VI3 licences they do not appear. How long does this process normally take to complete. We have waited around 3 hours but they have still not appeared

Thanks in advanced for any help
