Unable to upgrade ESXi 3.5 to Vsphere ESXi 4.1

Hi, when I try to upgrade my ESXi 3.5 host to ESXi 4.1 using vihostupdate.pl its saying "This operation is NOT supported on 3.5.0 platform". I tried searching the forum but cannot find out how to get past this issue besides doing the alternate method of upgrading to 4.0 and than from 4.0 to 4.1. I prefer to just upgrade from 3.5 to 4.1 directly. Could someone please confirm if this is possible and if so why am I getting this error and how to fix it. My hardware is on the HCL. Its a Dell poweredge 2900. I have installed the vpshere client , vsphere CLI and also the file "upgrade-from-ESXi3.5-to-4.1.0-0.0.260247-release.zip". The command I am using is "vihostupdate.pl --server 172.16.30.13 --username root --password test1234 --install --bundle c:\Downloads\upgrade-from-ESXi3.5-to-4.1.0-0.0.260247-release.zip". I even tried using the commands in the upgrade guide which have a couple of extra flags at the end of the vihostupdate.pl command specfied above but that did not help either. I do not have virtualcenter or update manager. Pls help. Thx

You can first upgrade to 4.0 using Host Update Utility (included in vSphere Client installable file).

Hi Andre,

I was trying to avoid that method. Is there no way to upgrade directly to ESXi 4.1 from ESXi 3.5. I just saw the Vmware KB article "Upgrade paths for ESX/ESXi hosts" located at "http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=1019239" that states I have to use update manager and not vihostupdate to upgrade but upgrade manager only comes with vcenter and I do not have that. Thx

To a direct upgrade the official procedure require VUM, see page 55 of:

http://www.vmware.com/pdf/vsphere4/r41/vsp_41_upgrade_guide.pdf

Otherwise use the 2 step procedure:

Just to make sure it's not a version issue, make sure you installed the latest version of the vSphere CLI.
