Trying to create a bootable ESX USB drive

I am trying to setup ESX on a few servers, but some of them dont have a DVD drive, and others have no drive at all. The servers are Dell Poweredge 2850 and 2950 models. I tried using a portable USB DVD drive, but the servers dont seem to recognize it when posting. My friend said I could create a bootable USB thumb drive, but all attempts I have made doing this have failed. ANy help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

for ESXi, you may look at this link, http://www.vm-help.com/esx40i/Boot_ESXi_from_USB_flash_drive.php , but for classic ESX, I haven't seen it done successfully.
