I've trying to setup ESX4.0 in our test lab environment, I checked and checked all the
esxcfg-vswif -l
esxcfg-nic -l
esxcfg-vswitch l
the settings look fine but cannot "ping" the Service Console from other servers or can I "ping" even the Gateway for the ESX host. I've already tried deleting and recreating the vswitch and vswif but cannot get the ESX to access the network or access the ESX from the network via Virtual Centre.
I've already enabled the SSH and try and putty but cannot.
Any suggestions on what might be the cause I've already checked the "hosts" and resolv.conf files but cannot identify why I cannot connect to the ESX host.
Any help appreciated.
Cheers
I tried to add a ESX4 (trial mode) to the VC2,5 and didn't allow me.
This is not possible.
You need VC4 for manage ESX4.

So you have checked the ip address, netmask and default gateway? Network cable is good? Do you and a link light? Is there another NIC on the server that you can try? Double check the swtich port and make sure its configured correctly.
david
quickest way is to unplug all the network cable and only plug in the NIC port you want to use for service console
put in the DVD and re-image.
you can use the cli to remove and recreate the entire new virtual switch if you know to do so

Thanks guys, actually I've already tried deleting the vSwitch and vswif completely and recreating both but doesn't seem to work. :_|
Cheers........
Got a couple more things to try from the service console. if you run
esxcfg-nics -l
Do you see the nic(s)? Does the link show UP? If you run
ifconfig
Do you see vswifX? Does everything look set correctly? How about running
netstat -na
Is the default route showing up correctly? Any errors in /var/log/messages or /var/log/vmware/*?

Any vLAN setup on the physical switch? ie if so be sure to put the SC in a portgroup setup w/ the correct vLAN ID..
This can be done on the install (easiest) or you can console in (kvm) and delete/re-create the vSwith setting to match the vLAN if needed.
Guys thanks for the reply, I reinstalled and its working now.
However I have a query about adding ESX4 to Virtual Centre v2.5 U4, I create a new "Cluster" on on VC and add the ESX4 but it says something like "doesn;t support host" and I cannot add it.
Am I correct in assuming VC2.5 cannot manage ESX4, I must use vCentre?
Thanks
Have you enabled the EVC feature in your cluster?
Do you have license for add new host (or are you in trial mode)?

Actually I;m running some tests in a lab environment with trial for ESX3.5 and VC2.5, I tried to add a ESX4 (trial mode) to the VC2,5 and didn't allow me.
Thanks
