SIMPLE. Unable to network Vsphere in VMware workstation. Strange

This should be very simple, and I have reasearched what the issue could be but have not found anything yet.

Setup.

Vmware workstation 7 on Fedora 13. I have several VM's working fine via bridged network. No problems

I am now installing ESX 4.1, specify a static ip, proper gateway etc.... and it installs fine.

Problem: I am unable to get to the IP I have specified by http, ping etc...

I go into troubleshooting mode, ifconfig and see my IP ( 192.168.0.40 ) setup in ESX, but cant ping out either.

I am a Linux Admin by trade, so I have checked things and cent see any issues so far.

What can I check? I have double checked my settings for networking BTW and all looks fine.

Advice or things to check?

Thanks for the help.

FYI. I have also disabled the firewall in ESX, and chmod a+rw for all /dev/vmnet* devices on the host.

Ideas?

ok, I just installed the ESX 4.1 FREE version as well, and it works! It used DHCP be default and got an address and was pingable both directions on device vmnic0

The NON-Free one Vsphere is using the static IP on vswif0? Is that significant?

I have tried to dhclient vmnic0 on Vsphere and it would not get an IP from the DHCP server.

Just trying to give as much info as I can to assist.

Did you select a physical NIC for use with the bridged NIC for ESX? Which version of Workstation 7 are you running (7.1.2 is current)?

I had no issue getting ESXi 4.0 to run under Workstation 7.1.x earlier... I've not (yet) tried using ESXi 4.1 under the latest release of VMware Wosktation. Have you tried using ESXi 4.1 instead of ESX? Are you allowing ALL the ports that ESX/ESXi requires in the Linux firewall (if it's not disabled completely)??

Persoanlly, I wouldn't use Fedora to run VMware Workstation (or anything else for that matter)... Better to use either RHEL 5.x or CentOS 5.x...

The strange thing is that all other VM's under workstation are working fine and networked fine.

VMWARE Workstation is 7.1.2 build-301548

Network chosen was bridged to physical NIC like all other VM's.

I have disabled the firewall on the VSpere instance.

SOLVED. I hope this saves someone some time.

OK, in ESX non free ( Vsphere ), Bridged networking does not work as in other VM's.

Rather than choosing standard bridged, you have to choose the vmnet0 from the bottom and not bridged.

Now it works.

Odd.

vSphere includes both ESX and ESXi for the host servers... Licensing doesn't care if you install ESX or ESXi for the host when you have made the purchase. But, you can only download ESXi when you opt to get the free license... Moving forward, it's going to be a lot simpler since ESX will be gone and you'll only have ESXi to download no matter what license you get.
