Question regarding install of ESX 4.0 and selecting local network

I am hoping someone can help me.

I am installing ESX 4.0 and in the GUI it asks which card I want to use for "System Utilities" then it asks me to input an IP address and it say's vmnic0 as the label. This is where I am putting my public info such as local IP, gateway, dns, etc... Once VMWare finishes and reboot's I get a message saying to download tools from the local IP I input. The problem is I can't ping this IP even though the test say's there were no problems detected on input. Also the MAC address of VMNIC0 corresponds w/the port I am using on my local network off of the server so I know my cable is plugged into the correct network. If I do an ifconfig from the console it shows all of my VMNIC's w/no address on VMNIC0 but it looks like it's assgined to a virtual switch because that comes up last in the list w/my local IP assigned to it.

What am I doing wrong? I need to be able to access this node to add it to VCenter but can't seem to get it on my local network.

Thanks for any help.

That looks right.

How about 'ping yourgatewayip' and the output of esxcfg-vswif -l
