PreUpgrade tool (AgentUpgradeChecker.exe) fails to run, doesn't do anything

Hello,

I am upgrading my VirtualCenter 2.5 to version 4 and wanted to run the Pre Upgrade checker tool beforehand. I have the software and tried to run the program (AgentUpgradeChecker.exe) but all I get is an hour glass for a few seconds and then nothing.

Has anyone experienced this or have a solution? I've tried launching it from the autorun.exe program (from the list that comes up) and nothing happens there either.

Also, if I can't get the tool to run, would I be shooting myself in the foot if I decided to move forward with the upgrade anyway?

Thanks,

Patrick

Hi,

I have never experienced this behavior. Have you seen the event logs of OS?

Which OS are you using to Upgrade vCenter Server? Remember vCenter Server 4.1 only runs on 64-bits OS.

It's too risky to upgrade vCenter Server without perform the Pre-Upgrade tool. Some hosts could have troubles to communicate with vCenter Server after the Upgrade process and you cannot manage them.

I've figured out the problem - thanks to checking the event log for a .NET error and looking up the obscure error code. Found a post that the agent upgrade checker cannot be run from a network share, and must be run locally on the Virtual Center host. I moved the folder to the C: drive and voila - it runs!

VMWare should really put this in the documentation.
