Newbie needs help moving large vm from esxi4.1 to 5.1

The vm hosts are on different subnets. The vm size is 1TB. When I tried downloading the vm to my windows desktop, it never completed even after 72 hours! I need to move the vm within 8 - 12 hrs time. I tried creating a new datastore on the 4.1 box and copying the vm to it. This worked very quickly. I then removed the SATA drive and tried adding it to the datastore on the 5.1 box. They didn't go well for me. The 5.1 box existing drives are on a raid 5 controller on a Dell 520 system. The 520 saw the addition of new SATA drive but esxi 5.1 did not. I don't know what to do to get this large vm copied / moved over to this other subnet.

a non free method would be to use veeam replication to seed the other side then when its time to move over to 5.1 the final changes shouldnt take to long to replicate.

did you check the errors on vmkernel or message file after the SATA drive was added - sometime ESXI does not detect the VMFS datastore thinking it to be a snapshot -- at that we need to enable resignaturing

hope this helps

Hi  Mate,

I have hit the same problem 3TB hard drive unable to use as a Datastore, ESXI sees the drive with zero capacity.

Have you found a solution.

There’s a 2TB disk size limit. I replaced the 3TB with a 2TB drive and the drive appeared with 1.82TB available space.
