New to vSphere

I'm in the process of evaluating vSphere. After reading several PDFs I finally got a test server going with vSphere and vCenter.

I installed vCenter on a VM and all seems to go well, but for one aspect - vCenter Converter.

I'd like to test migrating some VMs created with MS Virtual Server 2005 R2, but for some reason I don't have an icon or link to launch vCenter Converter. I went to vCenter client and added the plug-in to my vCenter client installation, but I'm still unable to find a way to perform this conversion.

I installed vCenter Converter and Update Manager on the same VM where I installed vCenter, I don't know if this 'best practice', but the only feature that's not working (or appears not to work) is Converter.

Any ideas will be appreciated.

Thanks!

Now, how exactly do I launch this application?

As I written before, use your client (with the converter plugin installed and enabled), right click on ESX (from inventory view) and choose import.

You must install the server part of the convert on the vCenter Server.

Then you have also to install the plugin for the vSphere Client (from plugin menu).

When it is installed and enabled you can right click on a ESX and choose import...

Ok, I get it. I guess I have downloaded the wrong install. Is this applpication a separate download?

Basically, I ran the setup from the ISO I downloaded as part of the trial. Looking at the downloads I see this product - VMware vCenter Converter Standalone - is this the correct one?

Thanks again for your assistance.

P.S. I downloaded this ISO: VMware-VIMSetup-all-4.0.0-162902.iso and esx-DVD-4.0.0-171294.iso

Converter Standalone is another product and it is free.

Converter Enterprise is available as a plug-in of vCenter and you can install the server part from vCenter DVD.

Then you can install the client part from vSphere Client / Plug-in menu

Ok, I'm up to that point. I've installed the plug-in on my vCenter client. Now, how exactly do I launch this application?

Is this launched via vCenter client or directly from the server itself? At the server, I don't see any icons related to Converter - that's why I'm confused.

You're correct!

I misread your first post (that's what happens when I multi-task).

Thanks for your help! Smiley Happy
