NaviAgent in ESX 4?

I upgraded one of our ESX 3.5 hosts to ESX 4 using the update manager, and all went smoothly.!http://communities.vmware.com/images/emoticons/grin.gif!

Now as expected the newly upgraded ESX 4 host does not have the naviagent for our EMC Clariion CX3-20 installed or running. No problem I thought I would just reinstall it. we have version 6.26 and I ran the .sh script and it appeared to go ok. I started the service and again everything appears ok. But the Navisphere does not see the agent and I am not sure where to go from here. The PowerLink is one of the worst web sites I can imagine when trying to find something, and I could not find a reference to esx 4 anywhere. Is it supported? Is there a different install procedure? Anyone know?

For naviagent on ESX I usal use the rpm version.

You have only to configure the agent.config file and open the firewall ports.

I had no issue installing the agent (I believe 6.22) on my 2 test hosts. Both registered with the CX without issue.

Did you also modify the agent.conf file for your environment? I believe it goes in /etc/Navisphere

From my experience the Navisphere Host Agent is not required vSphere 4.0. With these versions of VMware the native multipathing driver performs

a registration "push" down all paths at each boot. With this functionality, no host agent or manual registration is required. So, if there is an issue with the registration, the problem is not with the agent. Try to remove the agent from the server, rescan the bus, and perform an update now on the Clariion array.

I'm curious to see how this goes. I read a document that talked about the registration built into vsphere 4, but it seemed to indicate that only the CX4 series was compatible.

I hope it works out of the box, and furthermore hope WWN aliasing is built into ESX4i....can anyone comment on that?

From my understanding, this is supported based on the ESX software and not the storage array. Also in FLARE 29, that was just released by EMC, the array recognizes the actual virtual machine rather than just the ESX server itself. This makes things run ALOT smoother when trying to allocate storage to a VM.

According to EMC Primus article emc220412, the Navisphere host agent should not be installed on ESX 4 hosts. It also says, "For ESX4, the ESX kernel will perform an auto registration to a CLARiiON array

of all releases."

I have two new ESX 4.0 hosts in my environment and neither have the naviagent installed on them. They connect to my CX3-20 with no problems. So long as your fabric is zoned correctly is should detect the hosts just fine without naviagent.
