Migrate from Windows vCenter 5.0 to vCenter Appliance 5.5 (with existing Oracle DB)

We're currently running vCenter 5.0 on a Windows 2008 R2 server connected to an Oracle database on Solaris.

I was reading the 5.5 Upgrade docs and watching VMworld2013 re-runs, when I noticed that the Engineers seemed quite in-favor of using the vCenter Appliance.  They also mentioned how easy future upgrades would be once you were on the Appliance.

Is it possible to install the 5.5 Appliance in a VM and connect it to our existing Oracle DB (keeping the data of course)?  Sure seems like it would be a lot easier.  Don't need linked-mode, UpdateManager, etc.

Thanks...Lyle
